Helpful tips

Having been to Sandals Negril we have some additional info to help when planning your stay!

1. Research the restaurants at both resorts. While children cannot come to Sandals for anything other than the wedding, adults can freely go to either Sandals or Beaches. Make a list of restaurants you'd like to go to and if reservations are required make them as soon as you arrive! We found out the hard way that you cannot make same day reservations. Also, be sure to check the restaurants dress code.

2. Give yourself plenty of time when flying. It is recommended to be at the airport two hours before an international flight. Try to fly on the earliest flight you are comfortable with. Having layovers, customs and immigration and a 90-minute drive to the resort takes about half your first day away. On your last day, a midafternoon flight is best. Check out from the resorts are at 11 but once checked out they will take your bags and you can enjoy lunch before getting on a shuttle to take you to the airport.

3. Don’t over pack. We made that mistake!

4. Beach and pool chairs will get taken fast! If spending the day lounging by the pool or beach is something you are interested in, then definitely go reserve your spot early in the morning! Something as simple as a book or flip flops will let other guests know it is taken.

5. All the rooms are beautiful and steps from the beach. While a club level room might be appealing because of the in-room bar and room service, it is not necessary. Different bars open and close at different times but there is always at least one open until 2 am. Plus, food is served 24 hours on the properties. From a late night grill open until 6am, to a continental breakfast starting at 6am before the breakfast buffet opens.

What to bring

Jamaica is in the sunny Caribbean and even in November it is nice and hot and humid!

-Bathing suits of course!

-Flip flops

-Sunscreen (they do sell it at the resort but you will be paying a premium!)

- Tennis shoes if you decide to leave the resort and go on any excursions

-The resorts provide beach towels but I would suggest bringing one or two of your own. Sometimes the towels can be hard to find and if you have your own you can mark your beach chairs as taken!

-Wedding attire

-Chargers for phones, tablets, camera

-While the resorts are casual and you are free to eat when and where you want, some restaurants do have a dress code. Be sure to check

Passports

Passport Information

https://travel.state.gov/content/passports/en/passports.html

Passports are required to travel to Jamaica regardless of age, and must be valid throughout your entire stay.

Routine processing times on passports are 4 to 5 weeks. However, there is a possibility of a passport renewal backlog in 2017. It is better to play it safe and start your application or renewal as early as possible.

Where to Apply

Where you apply depends on a few things:

1. Are you traveling within 2 weeks or do you need to obtain a foreign visa within 4 weeks?

Apply in person at a Department of State Passport Agency

You may apply for any service (first-time application, renewal, passport card, etc.) at a passport agency.

You must pay the Expedite Fee when applying at a passport agency.

Appointments and proof of immediate international travel are required. See detailed instructions for the agency where you wish to apply on their agency page.

2. Can you wait a little longer? (2-3 weeks for Expedite, 4-5 weeks for Routine)

You can submit an application by mail to:

Renew a passport (must be eligible) *

Change or Correct a passport

Replace a limited passport (must be eligible)

You must apply in person at a Passport Acceptance Facility (post office, clerk of court, etc.) to:

Apply for a first-time passport

Renew a passport that is not eligible to renew by mail (same process as applying for a first-time passport - see previous bullet)

Apply for a passport for a child under the age of 16

Apply for a passport for an adolescent 16-17 years old

*If you qualify to mail in your application (renewal, correction, etc.), do not go to a passport acceptance facility.

3. Are you applying from outside the United States?

Applying for a U.S. passport while outside the United States* is a different process from applying for a U.S. passport while inside the United States.

For information on how to submit an application for a U.S. passport overseas, please visit Applying from Outside the United States.

*Exception: If you reside in Canada, you may renew your passport by mail if you meet all eligibility requirements. Please visit our Renew a Passport page for more details.

You can also download the mobile passport app for when you are returning to the US! mobilepassport.us

Flight Information

Airport

The closest international airport to Negril is in Montego Bay. There are many airlines that fly there including Southwest. When going there recently we flew Delta there with a layover in Atlanta. Coming back, we flew Southwest and had a layover in Houston. We preferred Southwest because the seats were not assigned, but feel free to choose your own airline!

Please be sure to give your flight information to your resort and to email it to us at mrsjessiebailey@gmail.com. If multiple wedding guests are arriving around the same time they can take the shuttle (provided by the hotel) together and we can arrange a private group check in.

Once landing in Montego Bay you will be required to go through immigration and customs. It took us almost an hour to clear it. Afterwards you will be greeted by a Sandals or Beaches represented who will collect your bags from you and direct you towards your shuttle. The ride from the airport takes about 90 minutes, but don’t worry! Its comfortable!

Travel Information

Jamaica

Here is a little more detailed information about the country itself, (taken from VisitJamaica.com)

Banks / Currency:

Licensed cambio centers and commercial banks are accessible in all resort areas. The official currency exchange rates vary daily, so it’s advisable to shop around for the best rate before converting your cash. Most of our ATMs accept international bank cards, with Visa, MasterCard, Cirrus and Plus logos. Banks also give credit card advances, change traveler’s checks and other financial services.

Climate:

We enjoy a hot and humid tropical climate all year round, which is exactly what you want for a relaxing vacation. Temperatures range from 19 degrees Celsius (66 Fahrenheit) to 32 degrees Celsius (99 Fahrenheit). Even though we’re known for our sunshine, we have two rainy seasons a year, from May to June, and September to November. Hurricanes may pass over the island during the months of June to November, so keep an eye on the news.

Clothing:

Lightweight, breathable fabrics are the way to go here on the island. Shorts, swimwear and flip flops keep you chilled on our beaches. A thin sweater will keep you cozy in the evenings. And semi-casual wear for women, and a jacket for men, will get you into all our fine dining restaurants. Whatever you do, don’t pack too much, as you’ll want to take some of our special clothing back home with you.

Communications:

Jamaica is well connected to the rest of the world. Direct international telephone service operates in all areas, 24 hours a day, and telephone operators will gladly facilitate collect, third-party or credit card calls. E-mail and Internet access is available too, usually at hotels and parish libraries, but also at local Internet cafes. Three daily newspapers and five weekend newspapers will keep you in the know, while some hotels and gift shops receive the international editions.

Driving:

Here on the island, we drive on the left side of the road. The speed limit is 50 kmph (30 mph) in built-up areas, and 80 kmph (50 mph) on highways, and all drivers are required to carry a valid license. Jamaica recognizes valid International Driver’s Licenses, but visitors from North America may use their country's license for up to three months per visit. Car rental is available in most major towns, cities and airports, but you can be no younger than 25 years old to hire a car yourself.

Drugs:

In Jamaica, the use, sale and possession of drugs such as ganja (marijuana), cocaine, crack, ecstasy, heroin and any other controlled substance is illegal. Violators are subject to severe punishments – specifically arrest, fine and imprisonment. Don’t ruin your vacation.

Electricity:

The electrical supply in Jamaica is 110 volts/50 cycles standard, and electrical appliances use plugs that are two-pronged and flat (such as those used in the United States and Canada). Bring along any adaptors of convertors you might need if this doesn’t suit some of your appliances and chargers. Most hotels will provide you with hair dryers, alarm clocks, radio and a clothes iron, but make sure you find out first.

Language: Officially, we speak English but we like to mix it up with our own island version of patois. It takes a little getting used to, but you’re sure to have lots of fun trying out a few of our expressions. Look at our Patois page to learn some words and phrases before getting here.

Time Zone:

Jamaica falls within the Eastern Time Zone (UTC/GMT -5 Hours) and does not observe Daylight Savings Time. At approximately 18 degrees north of the equator, the island falls within the tropics, and as such does not experience drastic seasonal changes in sunrise and sunset times. Year-round, the island averages between 11.5 and 12.5 hours of sunlight per day.

Water:

Jamaica has hundreds of natural springs and rivers, both above and underground. Over the years, we have developed extensive water treatment and supply systems island-wide, so all drinking water in Jamaica is purified and filtered by modern methods. Our water is safe for you to drink, clean your teeth, bath and wash clothing in. If you choose not to drink the water, rest assured - there are many brands of Jamaican spring water that meet or exceed the highest international standards, available at most shops and restaurants.
